Part 3 of 3: Serving in Christ
Please begin by answering this question honestly in your own words.
Do you ever feel like you have to keep "paying" for past sin, even though you know it’s forgiven? Where does that feeling come from?
Hebrews 10:14
For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.
Read this slowly before moving on. Notice both words held together: "perfected" and "forever."
The central idea of this lesson
Christ’s single sacrifice was sufficient to deal with sin permanently; believers are no longer meant to carry an ongoing consciousness of guilt.
Old Testament sacrifices had to be repeated endlessly, and that very repetition proved they could never fully deal with sin, leaving worshippers perpetually conscious of it.
Hebrews 10:1
For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect.
Christ’s offering, by contrast, was made once and perfected forever those who are being sanctified: a completed, sufficient work.
Hebrews 9:12
Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
Under the New Covenant, God does not merely tolerate forgiven sin; He declares that He will remember it no more.
Hebrews 8:12
For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.
Salvation operates entirely through God’s undeserved favour, not through ongoing religious duty or performance meant to maintain standing.
Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
Going Deeper
A believer who cannot let go of forgiven sin is, functionally, still living by the old covenant’s logic of repeated, never-quite-sufficient payment, rather than resting in the New Covenant’s one, complete sacrifice. Persistent, unresolved guilt after genuine repentance is not evidence of humility; it denies the sufficiency of the cross.

|---|---|---|
| Hebrews 10:1-2 says the old sacrifices’ repetition proved their insufficiency. Where in your own life have you tried to "repeat" an effort to resolve guilt that Christ has already dealt with? | ||
| What does it mean, practically, that God says He will "remember" forgiven sin "no more" (Hebrews 8:12)? | ||
| How is unresolved guilt, after genuine repentance, actually a denial of the sufficiency of the cross rather than a mark of humility? | ||
| Read Hebrews 10:14 slowly. What does it mean that believers have already been "perfected forever"? |
These questions are designed for open conversation at any level of experience. There are no trick questions and no single correct answer.
Christ’s sacrifice was complete. This week, practise living as though the debt truly is settled.
| Context | How I Apply This |
|---|---|
| Personal life | Identify one piece of forgiven sin you are still, functionally, carrying guilt over, and bring it to God as already settled. |
| Church community | Read the whole of Hebrews 10 this week and let its argument for Christ’s sufficiency dismantle any remaining sense of unresolved debt. |
| Difficult seasons | When a forgiven failure resurfaces in your mind, deliberately respond with Hebrews 8:12 rather than self-condemnation. |
| Scripture to carry | Memorise Hebrews 10:14: "For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified." Let "forever" and "perfected" settle any lingering doubt about your standing. |
