Part 3 of 3: Serving in Christ
Please begin by answering this question honestly in your own words.
Have you ever tried to earn a clear conscience by simply "being good enough"? How did that attempt end?
Romans 3:20
Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Read this slowly before moving on. Notice what the Law is said to produce here: knowledge, not righteousness.
The central idea of this lesson
God’s Law was never given as a path to righteousness; it was given to reveal sin and expose the need for a Saviour.
Every person carries an innate moral conscience through which God speaks to human accountability, even apart from the written Law.
Romans 2:14-15
For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, who show the work of the law written in their hearts.
The Ten Commandments expose the true standard of God’s holiness. Jesus intensified this by tracing commandments like murder and adultery back to the heart itself.
Matthew 5:21-22
You have heard that it was said to those of old, "You shall not murder... But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment."
By the law is the knowledge of sin. The Law’s function is diagnostic, showing what is wrong; it was never designed to solve it.
James 2:10
For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.
No one can achieve salvation through partial or even near-total obedience. The Law’s standard is all-or-nothing, which is precisely why it cannot save.
Romans 10:4
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
The solution the Law itself cannot provide is found in Christ. His righteousness is given as a free gift, not earned by performance.
Going Deeper
The Law functioned as a tutor to bring us to Christ (Galatians 3:24). Understanding this matters for evangelism: no one is without some sense of moral accountability to answer for, which is precisely what makes the Gospel’s offer of Christ’s righteousness good news, not merely additional information.

These questions are designed for open conversation at any level of experience. There are no trick questions and no single correct answer.
The Law’s job was always to reveal, not to rescue. Let it do that work this week, then bring what it reveals to Christ.
| Context | How I Apply This |
|---|---|
| Personal life | Watch for any moment you catch yourself trying to "earn" a clear conscience through performance rather than resting in Christ’s righteousness. |
| Church community | Read one of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-17) and let it show you, honestly, where you fall short, then bring that immediately to Christ, not to self-improvement. |
| Difficult seasons | When guilt resurfaces over old failure, meditate on 2 Corinthians 5:21 as your identity, not your effort. |
| Scripture to carry | Memorise Romans 3:20: "By the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin." Let it dismantle any remaining reliance on self-effort for right standing with God. |
