Every act of practical love toward the least has a second recipient. Read the verse until you see who.
The central idea of this lesson
Love is something you do: nearly all of it is nonverbal, the least of these are its address, and Jesus Himself receives every deed of it.
Here is a striking fact: the Gospels never record Jesus saying the words "I love you". The greatest lover in history demonstrated rather than declared, feeding, touching, healing, washing feet, dying. This lesson presses one truth home: love is overwhelmingly something you do.
Matthew 25:35–36
For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.
When Jesus describes love at the final judgement, every item is a deed: food, drink, welcome, clothing, visits. Words barely feature. If your words say love and your actions say otherwise, everyone, including you, believes the actions.
Note
God's own love was demonstrated, not merely declared: "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). The cross is love's grammar: a verb.
Matthew 25:40 reveals the staggering economics of kindness: whatever is done for the least is received by the King. You cannot make Jesus a meal, visit Him in hospital or clothe Him this week, except that you can, at the address of the nearest person in need. "For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints" (Hebrews 6:10).
Going Deeper
This truth abolishes the idea that ministry to people and devotion to God compete. In Scripture they are one motion: love God, love neighbour, the two commandments on which everything hangs (Matthew 22:37–40). The soup you carry across the road goes to two doors at once.
Did Jesus feel like dying? Gethsemane answers: "not My will, but Yours". Love chose our welfare against overwhelming feeling. That settles a question many believers never resolve: love is not hostage to mood. It seeks the other's benefit regardless, and this is only possible with God at the centre, "for God is love" (1 John 4:8); cut off from the source, the stream dries.

Love is also what remains: prophecies complete their work, knowledge is superseded, but love never fails, and love is the one treasure carried beyond the grave. A life spent on deeds of agape is the only portfolio that survives the exchange rate of eternity. So become the right person rather than hunting for the right person; do the Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12) before it is done to you; and let love cover what hatred would publish.
Practical Tip
This week, love Jesus directly through Matthew 25: pick one, feed, refresh, welcome, clothe or visit, and do it for a "least" who can never repay you. Tell no one except Him.
