Does the devil feel more real to you than the authority you have over him, or less? What has shaped that instinct?
1 John 3:8
He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
The verse states the purpose of the incarnation in one clause. Whatever the devil builds, the Son came to demolish.
The central idea of this lesson
Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil, and He has armed His people with His Word and His name; the believer fights from victory, not for it.
Roughly a quarter of Jesus' recorded ministry involved setting people free from demonic oppression. Many believers quietly assume such things belong to other times or other places; Scripture, and the experience of anyone long in ministry, says otherwise. The good news is that this subject, rightly seen, produces confidence rather than fear.
Acts 10:38
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
Oppression is the devil's work; destroying it is Jesus' stated purpose (1 John 3:8). Every deliverance in the Gospels is a demonstration of a kingdom changing hands.
Colossians 1:13
He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love.
Note
The believer's deliverance is first of all positional: you have already been transferred out of darkness' jurisdiction into Christ's kingdom. The enemy's only remaining weapons against a transferred citizen are deception and intimidation, which is precisely why he fears the Word that exposes him.
Ephesians 6:17
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Of the whole armour of God, one piece is offensive: the Word. When Jesus faced Satan in the wilderness He did not argue, reason or panic; three times He answered "It is written" (Matthew 4:10), and the tempter left. What worked for the Son of God in person is the weapon He hands His people. Spoken Scripture does what shouting never will.
Caution
This battle is real but it is not against people: "we do not wrestle against flesh and blood" (Ephesians 6:12). The moment spiritual warfare turns into suspicion or fear of human beings, it has left the biblical rails.
Ask anyone who has tried to establish a habit of Scripture and prayer: the interference is strangely specific. The enemy does not mind religious activity; he minds believers knowing God through His Word, because informed believers are dangerous to him. Resistance around Bible study is not a sign of failure but of significance.
James 4:7
Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
The order matters: submit first, resist second. Authority over the enemy flows from being under authority; a life yielded to God can resist with confidence, and the promise is not that the devil might flee but that he will.

Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Jesus gave His disciples authority to cast out demons in His name (Matthew 10:8; Mark 16:17), and the seventy returned astonished that it worked. The name of Jesus is not a magic word; it is delegated authority, effective in the mouth of those who belong to Him and live under Him. The believer need never be bullied: greater is He who is in you.
Practical Tip
When oppression, fear or dark suggestion presses in, do what Jesus did: answer aloud with written Scripture. Keep Philippians 2:9–11 and James 4:7 ready. Speak them, submit afresh to God, and stand; fleeing is the enemy's job, not yours.

Deliverance truths are lived quietly long before they are needed loudly. Consider these areas.
